The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in December, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 2.7 percent before seasonal adjustment. The index for shelter rose 0.4 percent in December and was the largest factor in the all items monthly increase. The food index increased 0.7 percent over the month as did the food at home index and the food away from home index. The index for energy rose 0.3 percent in December. Inflation pressures eased in December as consumer prices rose less than forecast in the final month of 2025. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Tuesday morning showed headline consumer prices rose 0.3% over the prior month and 2.7% over the prior year. Economists were expected a 0.3% monthly increase and a 2.7% rise over the prior year, according to estimates from Bloomberg. On a "core" basis — which includes the more volatile categories of food and energy, consumer prices rose 0.2% over last month and 2.6% over last year, according to the CPI.
