    The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis in December, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 2.7 percent before seasonal adjustment. The index for shelter rose 0.4 percent in December and was the largest factor in the all items monthly increase. The food index increased 0.7 percent over the month as did the food at home index and the food away from home index. The index for energy rose 0.3 percent in December. This CPI was hawkish under the hood:

• Headline stable only because gasoline fell
• Services, shelter, food, and travel are re-accelerating
• Core inflation is not decelerating

This report does not support early rate cuts. It confirms inflation is stuck near 2.5–3%, not falling toward 2%.

Mind you we still never got Octobers CPI data which was omitted. So I wonder what the actual inflation numbers are factoring that as well.

Pretty much in line with expectations.

The Core m/m figure of 0.2% to three decimals is on the higher end: 0.239%. Core inflation is easing, but not fast enough, shelter and services remain sticky. Goods disinflation is helping, but services inflation continues to dominate.


Shelter +0.4% (OER +0.3%): Largest contributor again, shelter continues to do the heavy lifting in core inflation.

Food +0.7%: Broad-based food inflation re-accelerated, with groceries and dining both firm.

Recreation +1.2%: Largest one-month increase ever recorded for the category, pointing to strong discretionary demand.

Airfares +5.2%: A sharp rebound, adding volatility back into transportation services.


Used cars & trucks –1.1%: Continued normalization in vehicle prices, helping offset shelter and services pressure.

Gasoline –0.5%: Energy was a mild drag despite strength earlier in the quarter.

Communication –1.9%: One of the few consistent deflationary categories within core.

Household furnishings & operations –0.5%: Goods-side weakness remains intact.

You right but I don't think that inflation is dictating rate cuts anymore same as labor market. I think we are entring the era when cost of maintenance of public debt starts dictating rate cuts despite inflation, that's why investors are afraid of FED changes.
