I agree, that’s what has been drawing me to it. It is volatile and it has strong ties to economic fundamentals.

Do you have any opinion on where it will be say 3 months from now?

Thanks for the in-depth info EventsTrader. From what little I know about Copper, I would think global slow-down worries will hit pretty hard. I am thinking a short position is in the cards for me. Still on the sidelines, but thinking of hopping in shortly.

I'm not sure there is a best metal to trade! Gold has more liquidity. Copper has plenty too though. I like both, but the better metal depends on what's going on.

With copper you are trading the commodity and can weigh and assess risk based on factors related to supply and demand. Fundamentals of Copper!

In gold, it feels like you're just trading the USD at times. But not always as we've seen recently. During tail events, global uncertainty, risk on/off environment, etc. During flight to quality, gold is the better metal to trade.

My last example may be the most important. When the market is closed and you are deciding on a gift for a hot date, go with gold.

Right on SurfsUp. That's exactly right in theory. During global slowdown, commodities such as copper that are used to build and expand during good times aren't needed as much. Supply builds up, demand dries. Copper drops. You're on target. It gets hit hard.

Here's why I'm weary of shorting copper right now:

First, China. A couple things. China's data isn't exactly audited, so they may report numbers that paint a rosier picture than what's actually going on. A more important factor is the Chinese government's plan to use monetary easing and stimulus measures to combat any slowing growth. Since China uses most of the world's copper, I'm not taking any short positions while China keeps stating stimulus is coming.


Longer term, not a lot else should matter if the global economy is in fact slowing down. Copper will depreciate regardless.

I expect copper to be higher. We're late in the business cycle, but it is still favorable for growth. I'm heavily invested in equities so I'm bullish on copper by extension since a lot of the same factors effect both. Now, there are two big caveats to that:

1. I think copper depends more on EM growth. I'm bullish on US equities which may not need EM growth to prosper (historically they haven't.)
2. I can't predict how the trade war will go. Stan Druckenmiller just sold everything and bought treasuries because he doesn't want to participate in this environment. That's a reasonable decision given how high the stakes are and how great the element of uncertainty is around this.

I have been in copper market for good 5 years now, good videos Aleksey Bukuros.
Average volume for weekly is around 500k per week for 2018, for 2019 its been around 350k per week, about 30% lower volumes.

Also, USD-CNH (spot), as long as the pair is above 6.9, its kind of difficult for copper to cross 270 in the short term.

Hi, I am new to the thread and Copper trading. I havent traded copper though it sounds always interesting to me. I have some general understanding not sure its technically valid or not. If anyone expert can comment it will be great.
1. Because of heavy electrical cars requirement> copper demand has increased> might have shown up trend on chart? >> to what extent is true?

tush1822, you also need to research on supply as well when talking about commodities. Supply of all commodities has been increasing with good tech to mine same if for copper.

Kindly find attached International Copper Study Group (ICSG) Factbook for details on supply and demand.

Supply deficit or surplus has a huge impact on prices.

certainly, it can be truth, but i think that many assets have not nothing with fundamental news. Any data it is just reason for make manipulation on market.

Copper looks like it has just gone into a small trading range (just above its early January lows) after a big decline this year. I think a bullish breakout would happen and am thus planning to go long on dips towards 260.0 with SL below 256, targetting 267 and 270.
