thanks for replies, glad to hear working fine for you tiki trader, maybe it is my internet connection...i'm a complete idiot techno wise, taken me yonks to learm mt4

Thanks for the suggestion and I know what you mean because my previous broker had 4 mt4 servers but there's only two Oanda servers available on mt4 from what I can tell, the demo server and the live server.

There's no way you should be having those problems - unfortunately helpdesks are too often stacked with folks making up answers and throwing out "maybe this, maybe that," so they can move on to the next caller.

I don't use Oanda, but if you're on their java platform and it is crashing, that is unlikely to be internet speed related - sounds like a java issue on your PC. If you have only one PC at your residence, it would be best if you could borrow or use a laptop through the 'busy' times as you say, to see how it behaves.

To quickly eliminate the internet pipe as an issue, you should confirm what type of speed/service you are paying for, and then measure it against results you get on http://www.speedtest.net/ ' measure in off/slow times, and measure speed when your Oanda platform is 'slow' or crashing.

But with the few details I'm reading, it sounds like a technical issue with your PC. I'd recommend you become more assertive with the Oanda folks and bring your problem towards closure, quickly.

I have more than one computer so i will try using oanda on my sons' and see.

Had a look at the speednet site, it suggests using their scan software to run a scan first, my sons computer got a virus doing that, not from speednet, some other site, this then blocked his security firewall from operating and took ages to fix, can i ignore the scan suggestion and just try the speednet?
I have uninstalled and re-installed java on mine, as per troubleshoot on oanda. I have the new Bt infinity, some new fibre optic broadband that is meant to much faster, hence why I got it, and only had it for about 2 months. (UK provider) I think it might be that?

I had similar issues for many months, it turned out regular defrags and registry clean-up got it sorted.

All the suggestions from Oanda were useless, but they have always treated me fairly in regards to my trades (even once voluntarily reinstating a trade that got closed by an server malfunction).

Really? They actually close your trade for you? Last time I asked (when I still had an account with them a few months back), they said they could not do that. You have to be logged on to your account.

Is there now a new policy in place at Oanda regarding this? With their crash/disconnection issues, isn't it time they made a provision for this as other brokers do?

Like too many sites on the web that are 'free' speedtest.net too employs some unfortunate trickery, albeit it harmless: the link you clicked on is actually an ad and generates them some revenue - do not install anything nor click on it; yes, some malicious sites will install fake software, frequently even touting itself as virus software, when in fact it is the virus.

Instead, click right on the map that will look something like the one I placed a circle on and wait for results that will show data similar to my own test results. Anything even one-quarter of my shown download speed is quite OK - I quickly googled BT, and if you've got an element of fibre in your connectivity your speed should be faster.

An equally important aspect will be your ping result - ping is the turnaround time from your physical PC to a server destination for a packet(s) to travel - shorter is better. (The download speed is akin to how much data you can push down your pipe in a unit of time)

Once you can determine these results are more than adequate - and do measure during those times when you're saying your Oanda connectivity is giving you problems - you can go back to Oanda and confirm it is definitely not your internet connection. The fact they're telling you so is akin to having a Ferrari, and someone telling you it can't go fast enough - don't buy it.

I can and have seen scenarios where installing and reinstalling java won't necessarily fix the problem (there are technical reasons why, but let's not go there yet.)

Do try it on that other PC - my suspicion is it will be better and work properly.

Maybe your computer is slow, i had a similar problem; when i used their fxtrade it was so slow, but the problem was in my computer, i turned off Aero in Windows 7, defragmented, and now fxtrade is very fast, my computer has better performance.

2. I did the speedtest, my results were - ping 53 - 48ms - download speed - 15 - 17.45 mbps - upload speed 6.91 - 7.97, they are slower than yours so assume it is my PC.

I have a demo mt4 account and it works fine...

Glad you've made some progress, but let me try to shed light on some of your interpretations ...

That's great news - now we know it's not your internet connection, which Oanda it seems too easily tried to dump out as a reason.

Some PC fine tuning sounds like it might be necessary. There are lots of variables to Windows in terms of how efficiently it operates. It depends on the version of the OS (XP, Vista, Windows 7), depends on how long it has been installed (generally windows gets slower over time, until one does a new install, partially because of other programs getting installed, memory footprint encroachment by auto starting programs, etc.), things like hard drive speed matter, CPU speed, potentially the speed of a wireless/wired connection, and many others. Start with a defrag, but a reinstall of Windows (after a backup of anything/everything important - is a reasonable suggestion.

Absolutely do not assume it is your PC - it is unlikely to be your PC.

First, every internet connection will have a different maximum and overall speed. Your upload capacity is clearly faster, which is one of the benefits of a fibre based connection, but it does little to help with the speed of data sent back and forth as part of your trading with Oanda. The ping rates and download pipe width is quite adequate. One can get different measurements on wireless and wired connections to and from your home based router. If you were to run the network speed test on the other PC that ran Oanda without lag, you should get the same result - that again confirms your Oanda fxTrade issues are not due to the internet/network speed your PC attains, but rather with the Windows environment and/or the examples I gave above.

That's good and again proves it is not your internet connection speed. MT4 connects to different servers, has different routing, and, most importantly here, is not java based and doesn't required additional windows operational overhead.

my goodness beljevena, that was quick and very detailed, thanks again. I'll get me husband to have a look at what you said, he's marginally more technical than me, i'm like...doh...

I have windows 7, and the computer is under a year old, but I have downloaded a load of stuff, webinars, programs, countless wee bits and bobs in my seemingly endless quest for Fx education!
I didn't even know you could re-install windows, I thought that came with computer and was just there forever! On one of my kids computers the service folk took it back to factory status and everything had to be reinstalled - are you talking about that kind of endeavour?

Anyway, thank you so much you have been a massive help and I won't trouble you again, nor clutter this thread up.
