"On Friday, Trump responded hours after the ruling with a 10% global tariff that he invoked under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. The statute allows the president to impose temporary levies for 150 days. Any extension requires congressional approval."

Section 122 tariffs require the condition of large and serious United States balance-of-payments deficits.

The USA has not had a balance of payments deficit since about 1973 when floating exchange rates were introduced.

Under floating exchange rates, the current account deficit (commonly known as the trade deficit) is balanced by the capital account surplus (net inflow of foreign capital).

Prior to floating exchange rates (when there were fixed exchange rates), this was not the situation.

I expect a challenge in the International Court of Trade or some other appropriate forum to investigate the legality of this (these?) latest measure/s.

I realize that all this is beyond the capacity of Mr Trump to understand. Not so for his team of legal and economic advisors who actually draft all his executive orders which are explained to him.

Edit - I found this. The data is not sourced, but it provides a picture (at least from 1980) of what I'm talking about.

Turning back the clock 12 months, isn't this exactly where we were then? And shortly before this announcement, I thought that Trump was being reasonable on Friday by imposing a 10% global tariff instead of the maximum allowed 15%. It all went out the window.

So, for the time being, the countries that negotiated a better tariff rate with Trump last year are screwed. For example, the UK only got a 10% rate.

Gold moved good last week and will probably continue to move good with this ongoing Tariff Chatter. Winning days last week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday netting 4R overall. There will probably be some more good risk/reward setups this next week because of that downside liquidity sweep. I actually took a loss on Friday and was part of it , lol, but netted on the week overall.

Just chaos from tariffs nothing else. Even the judges said it is gonna be messy to do all the refunds. Second, he max. could do a 10% tariff from what I heard. 15% is limited to 5 months if not the total of all tariffs. So he needs congress, which says no. So he failed as he cannot act like he wants.
