Is demo a step before real trading?

I opened a $200 demo, was able to grow it at $600 in just 2 weeks. I decided to try on live account same capital. I burnt $90 of it, what the heck did I just do haha.. I revenge trade

Demo’s good for learning the buttons and testing stuff, but real emotions hit only with real money. Totally different game when your cash is on the line.

I second this. I'm in that phase right now where demo accounts just weren't cutting it. It didn't feel real to me, fake money is just fake money. I opened a mini account and trade tiny amounts - but it feels different. My current trades are around $2 (profit/loss) each. Skin in the game helps me at least.

I think some people feel this to a great extent, some to only a small extent and others not at all?

What also interests me is that when you ask the most successful, most experienced traders, trading really big, real money accounts (either their own or for their employers) about this, their answers are almost along the lines of "I don't think about the money at all: it's just numbers on a screen, to me."

So maybe for many people, there's actually an advantage to "it not feeling real"?!

Demo accounts are good for getting check things and strategies, but once real money is involved, it's a whole new game. That is when you really start feeling the pressure and see if your strategy works when emotions are on the line. It’s the real test.

I believe it is a necessary and fundamental step. Starting with a demo account will allow you to test your strategy, develop your skill and perception of the markets. You will be able to check if your analysis is solid and if your strategy is the best option to start with. It is better to test it on a demo than on a real one.

But I would recommend starting a demo with realistic figures, as close as possible to your economic reality, because if you start with a demo of 10 000 $ and make operations of 1000 or 2000 $, the profits will be good, but if you go from a demo with these figures to a real account, with an economic capacity that only allows you to start operations of 10 $, you will feel that you are not doing things right or that “this is not what I expected” and the economic and emotional results will not be good at all.

Without taking into account that the losses can be overwhelming, since emotionally, nothing is comparable to reality. Seeing the killer in a movie is not the same as running away from him in reality. Focus on losing as little as possible rather than winning, and in the end your numbers will always be green. Don't use more than 10% of your account equity, make stop loss your friend and be cautious with leverage. In my opinion, this is the best way to start.

Totally agree with this. Starting with a demo account is honestly the smartest move for anyone new to trading. It helps you build confidence without the emotional rollercoaster of real money losses.

Tbh, I personally believe that a demo account is good for only one reason - to press all the buttons and see what they do. I had that belief that "trading" on a demo will give me experience and somewhat of an understanding how to trade profitably. Yes, I learnt something, but my knowledge and experience came from trading on a live, making bumps during the road and loosing money. Once you shift from a demo to a live, it's as if something clicks in your head and it's a whole different ballgame.
That's why I'd tell my younger self - do not waste your time trading on a demo. Learn the interface of the trading platform on a demo, deposit the amount you are willing to loose on a live and start trading. Do not use a high leverage and large volumes - 0.01 lot is more than enough, and when I started doing that I over a period of time I actually saw some results.
And the mistake that I hear of more and the "stick that broke the camel's back" is - i lost all of my money forex trading! It's a scam!
Duh, my first deposit was 500 dollars and when I lost it in several days it hurt. But lesson learnt! My next deposits were not higher than 50 bucks, of course I lost many of them, but the amount was never too significant that if I lost it I would mess myself up.
It's about your approach, risk tolerance, what financial loss you can handle and your patience - if you want to become filthy rich right away it won't work, but if you take your time sooner or later you will see the results

New to forex factory,

I got introduced to forex years ago when IML was around that's how I got into trading, I just recently started to take it seriously. finally opened my demo account and I've been learning and trading to get my feet wet, I'm finally learning my first strategy and the content creator I follow mentioned to use that strategy for 90 days in a demo account before going live. I'm currently learning price action trading and a few charts patterns with some indicators so that way I can have some wins. I've been good in some trades got some wins and got some losses so im still learning.

Demo is essential to learn how it all works, BUT you will never experience the two main emotions of Fear and Greed till its live.
I say once comfortable, start with micro lots -- 0.01 lot per trade..
From there its easy to slowly increase lots... GL

if last year I was sometimes on demo and sometimes on live account, this year from May I was only on live account. Today I lost hard through my own fault. I make the same mistake every time. I don't put sl and I don't close the transaction when I can only lose a little money. This year I made 2 times from a deposit of 25 euros 500 euros which I lost in one day. It took about a month to get from 25 euros to 500 euros and then I lost them in one day because I didn't put SL. Last month from 50 euros I made 340 euros in one month which I lost today because I didn't put SL and I didn't close the transactions manually because I said it would turn in my favor. as I usually make the same mistake... the first time I don't put SL I lose all the money... I'm tired of making the same mistake, now I should increase the account from 7 euros, it wouldn't be a problem, I've also increased the account from 4 euros but I'm tired of making the same mistake every time I manage to reach 300,400,500 euros

Demo has it's advantages and disadvantages, You can't really take demo trading seriously because you're not losing anything, I always advised people to learn on live accounts as many brokers accepts small deposits , can trade with 0.01 lot just to get a feel on it and have real expectations.

I think demo accounts are just good to get a good grasp of trading, platforms, etc or test some new strategies or EA but getting stuck in demo can just delays real feelings and emotions coming with real accounts. As long as those feelings don't hit you it's hard to understand the essence of trading. Some might get that with even a nano lot size account and someone might need big wins and losses to feel that.

I’m with the idea that demo builds platform skill, but live teaches consequences, that's where discipline gets real. A small live “training account” (micro risk) beats endless demo once you’ve proven you can follow rules
