They certainly are in an existential war with the US ; a clash of ideologies and geopolitical interests .

This is going to be a long and protracted battle ; both sides will pay lip service to the diplomatic efforts, however reading the room and behind the scenes both are planning and conniving to counteract each others strategy

You've got to ask yourself if a foreign country sails up to your shores, blows up your equivalent of the Pope, bombs the hell out of your country, blockades your trade and then offers a negotiation why do you enter that? My take is that the different political factions are more worried about each other than the US, a power who offers a nice counter-balance for some of them. Look at the recent arrest of Ahmadinejad for example, he might have gotten spooked but some are clearly thinking of a future where they remain alive to tell the tale.

Well, Gold is in precarious and shaky situation. On one site it is trying to go down due to the renewed fighting in the Gulf area. But on the other side it is trying to go up because recent US inflation data for June showed inflation went down. Of course this was so because USA and Iran stopped fighting in June, so the price of Crude oil went down, and inflation followed that. Inflation going down, means the Fed will not raise interest rates when they meet in two weeks from now. This is negative for the dollar, so the dollar is now generally weakening against the Gold, and most other major currencies.
