It is honestly surprising. In my mind, I would think countries in economic danger should look in wards and fight their own battles to help their citizens. But from Africa to Asia it appears many countries don't care about their citizens.

Political elites often gain at the expense of those outside of that social clique. Especially in non-Democratic countries helping citizens can be a zero-sum game because of this dynamic and so the elites actively work against their citizenry. Try reading Useful Enemies by David Keen for an examination of this in the DRC.

You want gold when inflation is unchecked and you don’t need to be liquid (when things are not turning acutely to shit).

You don’t want gold when inflation is expected to be met with raising rates and/or people need access to cash (USD mainly).
