Well gee, here's an idea: why not restore the Biden-era incentives for (much cheaper) renewable energy, so we don't have to worry about the price of oil?

And while you're at it, make it easy for households to generate as much of their own electricity (and store it in batteries) as possible, so we'll have a resilient energy infrastructure that doesn't fail every time the centralized power grid has a hiccup. But I digress...

I see the move was short lived though in various areas. Gold gave back most of the move. Oil is starting to climb back. Equities are trying...but...

The big question(s): 1) is it real? 2) if so, and China is asked for ANYTHING, the US would need to give something....so maybe that is where the "chip export restrictions" came into play this week? Those can now be "lifted" if China agrees? lol.

Well, by your logic we shouldn't have to provide billions of dollars in subsidies to the oil and gas industry. But we do.

Nuclear energy is is clearly better than oil and gas, but it's very expensive, and planning, permitting and construction take many years.

Geothermal, wind and solar come online much more quickly, and with battery storage can replace much of our oil and gas dependency at a lower cost.

As for reliability, I don't call a power source (like oil and gas) where you can't predict the price from day to day reliable. With renewable energy, once you've made the initial capital investment, the cost is negligible.

In responding to you, I'm assuming you are not a shill for the oil and gas industry, nor a complete idiot. Please don't prove me wrong. Just inform yourself of the facts.

If a government wants to curb a sharp rise in prices, intervening in futures markets can be faster and less costly than tapping into physical reserves. The Treasury or the CFTC can: Increase margin requirements; Limit speculative positions; Intensify surveillance of anomalous movements. In theory at least. Can backfire also, from unintended side effects on liquidity. Margin requirements?: Yes makes sense, but will impact liquidity. Anything else regulatory gets you into horrible legal precedents and ambiguously meaningless text (e.g. "hedge only purchases"). I can see margin, yes. And jaw boning.

But regulatory intervention, for me, doesn't fit the headline "using oil futures". That headline sounds knee jerk and desperate.

I smell blood in the water.
