China began preparations to ensure it has other alternatives to importing soy from the US back in 2018 when China didn't like some Trump trade policies.

The US didn't learn. Or more specifically, Trump.

I don't understand how the system works. Surely farmers sell to the pool, eg, Bunge or Cargill. Farmers don't sell to China.

Prices haven't plunged this year.at all. They have been stable at about 10 bucks a bushel all year.

What are we not being told?

This is a monthly chart of Soy futures, back to the year 2000. Prices are way down from recent years, but still well above pre 2020.

Something I learnt - paying subsidies to US farmers is quite common, pursuant to the Farm Bill 1933 which is reviewed on a 5 yearly basis.

So, this ought be no big surprise. US farmers are always well looked after, for most commodities including corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, sorghum (a type of grain), rice, peanuts, oats, barley, milk, swine, and calves (specifically, cows).

Since farm subsidies began in 1933, they’ve contributed an average of 13.5% of net farm income nationwide. In 2024, subsidies totaled 5.9% of farm income, 7.6 percentage points lower than the 91-year average.

Subsidies made up the largest-ever share of total farm income — 40.5% — in 2000. The years before and after were also among the highest: 37.1% in 1999 and 36.1% in 2001. Food prices fell in the late 1990s, reducing farm earnings. Government subsidies helped offset losses and kept many farms financially stable during this period.

The elevators are only buying enough soybeans for domestic processing, hence the price. Once the brokers have filled their contracts they aren't buying any more. And farmers have way too many beans so they can't get rid of them and many lack sufficient storage capacity to wait the trade war out.

The real irony is that the Trump Administration offered a $20 billion swap line and other forms of assistance to help stabilize the Argentine peso as a favor to his close friend the President of Argentina. Argentina then lowered export restrictions and sold 20 shiploads of Argentine soybeans to China in just two days. Estimated value of that transaction is almost as much as China spent last year buying American soybeans. Trump got played like a cheap fiddle! FYI Brazil starts soybean harvest season in a few weeks so don't expect a monumental trade deal.
