    National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett on Sunday defended Donald Trump’s decision to fire Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer, claiming the president “wants his own people there.” Last week, a weaker-than-expected jobs report proved to be a sore spot for the economy — and the president. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly jobs report on Friday showed the US economy added just 73,000 jobs in July. Funny thing is … this NFP is the most compelling case to rate cuts. Trump should be saying “ Do you get it now Powell ?! “, not firing someone that is propelling his case for a rate cut. This is a clear example of the inability of president Trump of understanding basic economics and a clear demonstration of his priorities. He prioritizes his public image instead of his performance.

I've been looking at the data for many years and never trusted any of it, not because of potential Political motives (I doubt there have been too many of those along the way) but because of the way it is collected, calculated, and presented. Adding Political interference will do nothing to improve the veracity of said Data.

I honestly think that the way Trump attacks Powell will cause Powell not to lower rates. The FED is supposed to be independent, its members have their own professional resumes and they create their own legacy. No one wants to be labeled as someone who has complied with a politician. If Powell - without justification in the data - will complied with Trump, then he should be dismissed for that. In other words, if Trump really wants to lower rates, he is doing the exact opposite with his statements. And then the question is whether that is not his intention.

Quite so. Leader Trump ought to be promoting that person.

But he wants rates down. The economy is strong line, which has never made sense to anyone else on so many levels.

I’m not sure how anyone can support the bls after many years of mistakes and very large and constant revisions. I’d guess they changed the methodology during Covid and haven’t fixed it for today’s economic reality. Government works very very slowly and they almost always follow inertia not innovation. That means the workers do what they did last month without really thinking about it. I don’t know who should replace the fired person but I can’t fault firing them for incompetence.
