In fairness it’s actually good for any government to rein in these pharmaceutical companies , their extortionate pricing policies are generally correlated to the highest bidder price structure .

Can’t fault any government for addressing this despite the well trodden narrative “ it’ll inhibit R&D “ from big pharmaceutical corporations .

Not sure why its taken so long to be honest

Bernie Sanders proposed legislation ten years ago to prohibit charging Americans more than 110% of the lowest price for which they sold a drug anywhere else in the world. It applied to about 100 specified medicines.

It didn't get sufficient support. Sanders is a commie.

Change the Constitution. America has amended its Constitution many times.

See my post above - Australia had to change its constitution to allow the necessary legislation to be passed for the PBS to come into effect. A referendum is quite a big deal - they rarely pass.

There's been constant debate for years about giving Medicare and Medicaid the ability to negotiate drug prices with the pharms. Guess what our politicians didn't allow it. I don't know if the republicans or democrats blocked it. I could find out, but it's not worth my time. Don't act like this is something only Trump thought of.

In America the laws to prevent anti-competitive behaviour are called "anti-trust". In other countries they are generally called something like the Competition Act.

These laws exist to prevent firms with market power (the opposite of price takers) from misusing that market power.

They are generally overseen by a government agency headed by economists and lawyers, who then invoke the judicial system to "rein in" or punish any naughtiness.

Clearly pharma companies do nothing to breach these laws. They a good corporate citizens, possibly a lot like, say, Meta and Microsoft.

Pfizer is an American company which has manufacturing plants in the US. Should it import drugs into the US that it manufactured outside of the US they are still exempt from tariffs, while at the same time being afforded protection from competition by tariffs imposed on other importers.

To the extent that they import drugs manufactured by a company not exempt (I'm not sure, let's say German Bayer), then the position is not so clear. That bit is confusing, and probably irrelevant anyway.

I am going by a Reuters report which says

The United States will impose a 100% tariff on imports of branded or patented pharmaceutical products from October 1, unless a pharmaceutical company is building a manufacturing plant in the U.S., President Donald Trump said on Thursday.

"There will, therefore, be no Tariff on these pharmaceutical products if construction has started," Trump said on Truth Social.

Australia changed its Constitution by a referendum in 1946 to enable what is known as the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. Someone mentioned the Australian PBS in this thread a bit further up.

And yes, Australia too has always had very powerful lobbyists, both in Australia and previously from England. That's no excuse.

That a nice made up take of what happened - OR - you could have watched the live press conference with the CEO of Pfizer and everyone involved in the negotiating process speak about this historic deal that will save Americans money on prescription drugs.
