Let's do some maths in broad numbers, back of the envelope stuff.

US Treasury revenues from income tax is about 2.4 trillion a year.

Total US imports about 3 trillion a year.

Let's assume that imports remain the same whatever tariffs are imposed.

3 trillion times 0.8 = 2.4 trillion.

Dr Navarro - 80% tariffs should do the trick, Mr Trump.

President Trump - That's great news, Peter, very great news, the greatest news I have ever heard.

I was being ridiculous.

Impose 80% tariffs would nearly double the price of imports. Demand for imports would fall off a cliff.

There is no way 2.4 trillion could be raised by tariifs. Ever.

Also don't forget to subtract the bailout money paid to multiple US industries, starting first with US agriculture. Maybe the crack econ team didn't check to see if US farmers actually need a foreign market. (About 20% of all US ag production is sold in foreign markets. Certain crops have much higher % - about 60% of US soybeans are exported, most of that to China. China has completely stopped buying US soybeans....)

With China (probably other countries also) stopping US ag imports, and a record crop incoming, corn & soybean prices have collapsed. Midwest grain elevators can not even sell last year's crop, so they have no room for this years incoming crop.

LOLZ.... S&P back to triple digits if this knuckle head gets a third term.

Tariffs are just TAXES ON THE PEOPLE anyway you cut it. Compare actual income from tariffs, assuming supply/demand is optimal (BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA) to a more transparent, consistent form of TAXATION named Income Tax.

The US will sink. Trump just does not understand Economics 101. An old wise man once told me two very important lessons:

1. Rock the Boat Today and you won't Feel the Waves Until Tomorrow - Pay close attention to this one. Economies are like big ass cruise ships. You don't turn those suckers on a dime my friend. That includes both ways, once she's turned, GOOD LUCK turning that badboy back around on a dime.

2. Fuck with the American Consumer at your own Peril. America is a consumption economy. Therefore, it's all about the consumer my friend.
