No, it's not that simple. The US does not have a nationalized petrochemical industry. In and of itself, the USA does not "produce" any oil or related products. This is done by a host of domestic and international corporations. Many of the largest oil refineries in the USA are owned by foreign corporations. These companies both import and export crude oil and petroleum distillates. They don't make their business decisions based on what the government thinks.

Just another "Let them eat cake." pronouncement by DJT.

Yes , I recognised that in my comment to ffg . Nothing is quite as simple as it seems , it doesn’t detract from the fact that US is ” technically “ self sufficient , as is the UK .

It's true (except when you dig down into the actual types of oil we like to refine vs what we drill locally). But, even so, that doesn't mean companies will be opposed to taking a profit. If the world is prepared to pay $90 a barrel, the US will be paying that same price. Exxon isn't going to give the US $60/barrel and Germany $100.

.....hence the 3.5% pop on the news. Could be a good short....but the risk is still to the upside for /cl.

Trump can lower the price of oil if he needs to. A call to OPEC will get them to produce more. A carrot and stick approach to US drillers will cause them to produce more. The perception of more oil coming online will reduce the price especially if the preceding price rise was on speculation of a reduction in Russian oil.

If you think a company or county wants to get on his bad side, just ask the EU, Columbia University, CBS, etc.

"just ramp up production" as the oil companies say "why would we EVER do that??? Price/barrel goes up? We keep supply limited to push it as far as we can!"

It’s not about “oil” there’s no such individual thing, lots and lots of different types and grades. The US doesn’t have the right types of refineries and everyone so far has refused to allow a new one to be built. It’s a lot more complicated than most understand. But currently there is no shortage especially with Europe allowing the secret buying of Russian oil.
