Congrats on being fully indoctrinated into the Trump school of macroeconomics. Most economists (right, they're probably all "woke") don't agree with you, but never fear. Most economists see this kind of tariff onslaught on ALL US trading partners as something that will lower GDP and increase inflation. Lower taxes? Who pays the tariffs? US importers and, ultimately, US citizens will pay the tariffs. An across the board 20% (avg) tariff is reaally just a new 20% sales tax. Thank you for a great explanation of the reality of all this tariff fun. A few points to add:

Traders should note that the US Dollar keeps moving down...hmm, what does this do to inflation?
It lowers inflation. The markets understand this per what can be seen in the bond markets...yes, the bond markets have been signaling for weeks that inflation is coming down, NOT going up per the state owned/controlled media.

As you've noted so very well, T only reciprocated 50% on most countries so he has lots of room to continue negotiating while still being able to call it reciprocating. This is the art of negotiating from a position of strength.

Long term stock holders (retirement accounts) are going through short term pain for long term mega gains.

A few of the stated goals that are NOT provided by the America hating media, include closing the IRS and using the tariff money to replace federal income taxes for operation of the government. This will not happen overnight, but I don't know any tax payer in the US who loves the irs and wants them to stay in operation (think KGB) - they are the only government agency allowed by law to condemn you as guilty until you prove you are not.

If this tariff tiff happens to spur future manufacturing growth so we take some economic independence and competitiveness back and it provides good paying jobs for our people, then those are great side affects.

As to future politicians removing these tariffs or giving away the country again: If the end result of this battle is prosperity and growth of the US economy, then no politician who wanted to get elected or reelected would want to mess things up. Well, unless they're one world WEF'ers, the CCP or extremist Muslims who want everyone to be their slave.

Now, lets speak to the one world WEF'ers...Isn't T doing some of your work for you? What do I mean? You need every country on the same level economically or they will not cooperate with moving to a one world system. Reducing/removing tariffs is a step toward your goals. So, my guess is you are really for what is going on, but you have to keep the hate of America going or you are no longer considered relevant. You need chaos or you cannot be the solution to the chaos you make. You need people in a constant emotional state or you cannot control them.

Not saying I disagree with some of what you said, but there is a lot of good news people aren't seeing:
The bond markets are showing inflation/prices are going down
and the US dollar continues going down...that reduces inflation as well.

Could you refresh my memory on any tax cuts that have been made. I only know of proposed tax cuts, but don't recall anything being completed yet.

If you found out that your boss was taking 50% of your paycheck and giving it to the guy at the desk beside you and had been doing it for decades, wouldn't you want that to end? Even "just" 10% being taken from you over your life time of working is a lot. (Using an average salary of $50,000 per year x 10% x 40 years of work = $200,000.)

Now, what if that guy the boss was giving 10% of your check to, saved up some of that 10% and started a side hustle business that makes and provides the food that you pay for at the cafeteria at work?

Not only are you being robbed of the 10%, but that fellow worker is getting paid again by you after he's taken your 10%, by selling you the product that you gave him the money to make in the first place.

Maybe this is just about getting ripped off...TWICE and the side affect is that the US manufactures more of their own stuff and creates jobs for their own country instead of giving money away to other countries and creating jobs for other countries?

And this is the target of criticism by assorted journos, pundits and the "experts" as it will allegedly kill the US economy? Hardly.

For an example:

China is charging 67% tariff on US goods. Trump Reciprocal Tariff is 34%
New Zealand: 20% vs. 10%
Japan: 46% vs. 24%
Switzerland: 61% vs. 31%
Australia: 10% vs. 10%
UK: 10% vs. 10%

Trump also previously announced a 10% tarrif on imported cars, which was 3% before that! This, when countries such as Japan or Germany charge a 15% to 25% tariff on American cars plus 15% to 25% VAT.

There appears to be nothing unusual about the tariffs the president announced and he is right regarding this issue. Again, remember that the tariffs the president announced are half of what these foreign countries charge on American products.

American market is a vast market with large purchasing power. Every manufacturer worth its salt wants to sell in this market for its own benefit. Thus, the United States holds a lot of power in this regard.

I drive a German car. I have vistited the fatories and car museums in Germany several times. Why do you think these cars are cheaper in New York than in Munich and Stuttgart where they are made?

There is no doubt that Trump wants to compensate for proposed tax cuts, including the proposed elimination of income tax on Social Security that would benefit seniors.

And is this something the left goes apoplectic about and considers it bad on the strength of the unverified assumption that the tariffs would tank the economy, create a terrible inflation and raise prices through the roof?

When the import tax on my BMW was a paltry 2.5% while a Chevrolet, no luxury car, was taxed at 10% in Munich plus 15% VAT, that was wrong and bad. Trump is right on that. This is what he is trying to fix while the left is going apoplectic with no justification.

The genius of Trump is in the fact that he recognizes the problem and goes to fix it while others who recognized the problem let it go. And Trump does not have much time to do anything - 3 years under the current law.

The Europeans are like little children: They consider it their "right" to have the American import tax for cars at 2.5% while their is 25% and counting (22% on the American pickups plus VAT) and spending 1% of their GDP on defence (2% lately when the NATO agreement is 3% and the American taxpayers are paying 3.6% of their GDP for defence) and devoting the rest to increasing their own standard of living.

As one of them told me on a visit here: "AMERICANS HAVE MORE MONEY SO THEY CAN PAY!" Nobody, but nobody is asking why do Americans have more money.

This is the imbalance Trump is attempting to fix. And he is right in that regard ladies and gentlemen.

When you tariff the whole world, there's no way around it. The tax cuts left a big hole in government revenue, and that revenue comes only through taxation. Only time will tell how this experiment will turn out. My guess is that prices will go up, and the average consumer will cut down on spending. In that case, tariffs don't bring jobs; they kill jobs.
Side note: The US has one of the lowest unemployment numbers in the world. Lack of jobs is not a problem, but government debt due to lack of revenue, on the other hand, is a major problem.

The irony of your first sentence. Your beloved "most economists" created the same market panic for the world ending china trade war of 2018. What happened? I'll remind you, m/m inflation never touched 3% and CPI never crossed 2.5%. Explain to me why halfway into the following administration when m/m inflation reached 9% guys like you were tiptoeing through the tulips? Look at historical CPI data for instance... I dare you. 8 months out of 48 of Biden's term were higher than the highest rate throughout Trump's first term. That's roughly 16% of CPI reports during Biden's term, higher than Trump's worst. The best explanation I have heard on why Trump is behaving the way he is, is that unlike other politicians, Trump doesn't take advice from economists. He despises them. Instead, he listens to businessmen like himself.

They don't care if the economy goes up or down. That only means they have to short instead of long the market.

But what they really want is low interest rates - something that can leverage to grow their business. And as it stands now, it's going to be a long time before interest rates come down to what they used to be.

Trump wants the country to get to the brink of recession so the FED brings the interest rates down really hard. And once they do it, he will get what he wants.

we are not all idiots. many of us know exactly what trump is doing and why.

he is not raising indirect taxes for all of us. only some of us.

yes, the tax cuts did leave a hole. indirect taxing, as you say, and wasteful spending cuts will fill part of that hole.

yes, prices will go up.

yes, hopefully consumers will spend less and pay down consumer debt.

hopefully we become more fiscally responsible and get in better physical shape such as the Japanese for example.

You would be right if his numbers were correct which they are not. Example... NZ has some 5% tarriffs on particular US goods, none with 20%
The only way you can get to 20 is to take GST/VAT at 15% and add 5%. That is illogical if you understanf how GST and VAT works.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but either these tariffs will make things more expensive for American consumers, or they’ll push companies to manufacture more in the U.S. What’s the downside of this? Could it cause inflation or make trade partners retaliate, effecting U.S. exportation? The U.S. market seems like a valuable asset, so isn’t it smart to use that leverage to benefit Americans?
