It wasn’t the classified documents piled up in a Mar-a-Lago bathroom. It wasn’t January 6th. It wasn't the grift of Trump and his family It wasn’t the Epstein file questions. In the opening days of the conflict (called an excursion as well) that began on February 28, 2026, the United States burned through roughly eight billion dollars.
Defense analysts estimate the first week alone cost about six billion dollars, driven by cruise missiles, long-range strike aircraft, carrier operations, and missile defense systems. Continued operations pushed the cost toward eight billion dollars within the first ten days, and that figure reflects only the opening phase of a conflict whose final cost could rise rapidly if the fighting continues.
Americans already know how fast that escalation can happen.
The war in Afghanistan ultimately cost more than two trillion dollars.
The war in Iraq and related operations cost another two trillion dollars or more.
Together they formed part of the roughly eight trillion dollars spent on post 9/11 wars, according to the Costs of War Project at Brown University.
