Whenever you encounter problems of this type with AI, you need to first show the AI the error (compilation error or otherwise), and if the AI still can't fix it, you need to tell the AI to first read the MQL5 (in this case) documentation!
There is no StringTrim() in MQL4 or 5.
There are StringTrimRight() and StringTrimLeft().

You also need to read the documentation!!!
Even if you are using AI!!!
The AI doesn't even know that both of the functions are int, not string type.
So, they don't return any string, they only return the number of cut symbols.

AI doesn't know anything - you need to know, at the least, how to direct the AI!!!
AI will often tell you bullshit which sounds intelligent but is actually false in reality!
AI will overcomplicate simple stuff.
AI will add and/or twek what we never asked it to do.
AI will often ruin the previously working code while fixing another issue.
Basically, AI is DUMB, STUPID, and DOESN"T KNOW ANYTHING!!!

Don't ask people to do your work for you, when you didn't even present what your idea is!!!
For example, I can see that in your code 3 bars are needed before the condition is checked, so the code does exactly what has been coded. AI can't read your mind and it doesn't understand what you want.
Same as any other human can't read your mind and can't understand what you want!

This are the instructions and logic behind my thinking. cpopy pasted from the chat with ai:
Say at 1.00 am the ea waits for the 15 minute candlestick to form. once we have OHLC then the ea waits for the candlestick that will close above or below the high or low of the reference candlestick. Then opens a trade at a user defined size which can be set size or capital % in the following manner. if the trigger cnadlestick closes above the reference candlestick then the ea will go long. if it closes below it will go short. stoploss will be x pips below for longs and x pips above for shorts of the reference candlestick. Take profit will be at x times the stoploss distance.
i am not a coder or nor do i know how to code...just trying to get a simple system that i use and it has a good PR to be automated....and yes after a multitude of attempts Ai is all the above that you have mentioned

OK, so from your simple logic, no wonder AI didn't understand.
This is a very general description of an idea.
If you are actually studying charts since 2008 (as your profile suggests), you should know better.
Anyways, I understand the idea, it's very simple, indeed.
And an AI can do this, provided you tell it exactly what to do, step-by-step.
For example, you used the expression "then the ea waits", and the AI attempts to code that idea, when the EA doesn't need to "wait" for anything. The EA simply needs to read the H and L prices of the candle at 1:00 am on the M15 chart (or whatever we specify in the inputs). And it needs to read the Close price of the first closed candle of the specified Tf. Now, you said nothing about the direction (Bullish or Bearish) of any of the candles you are interested in, so AI can't know that, I don't know that, either, I can only assume, but AI can't assume. The rest is normal stuff.

100% agree with you EV.
Any new project I do I sit down and write in word very specific, step by step rules, inputs, calculations etc, then paste to AI.
Also if you dont have at least a very basic understanding of code, the task of using AI is 100 times harder.
It constantly gets confused with mt4 and mt5 code, and if you dont tell it this, you will go around in circles for days... Just the blind leading the stupid..

The simplest way is to have your strategy coded as an indicator with arrow signals. With precise historical signals. And you can look back to check if it's really the strategy you want, and if it works well. And once the indicator is ready, have a simple EA coded, and integrate the indicator into it. The EA trades using the indicator. By the way, AI robots code indicators much better. If you want a very complex, complicated EA coded, only Claude.ai Opus 4.5 can do it; they're the best. Pro version.
On TradingView, there are tons of really good free open-source indicators. You just link the page to the AI, let it read and analyze the page, then copy-paste the Pine Script code into it — and it will rewrite / convert the indicator for you into MT4 or MT5 (MQL4/MQL5).
If the TradingView indicator is paid/premium, then usually there is no open-source code available. In that case, you can show the AI the page + screenshot(s) of the indicator, and if the logic/strategy is clear enough from the description, images, and explanation, the AI can often recreate a very similar version for MT4/MT5.
