The Pentagon will deploy U.S. forces to the Middle East on the heels of the Iranian attack on Saudi Arabian oil facilities, U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper announced Friday. “The president has approved the deployment of U.S. forces which will be defensive in nature and primarily focused on air and missile defense,” Esper said, adding that Saudi Arabia requested the support. “We will also work to accelerate the delivery of military equipment to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the UAE to enhance their ability to defend themselves,” he added. Oils reaction will be based on whether US troops are seen as stabilizing or destabilizing in this situation.

You could probably argue for either side and that makes this a coin toss. Not my kind of bet to be making...

If you are gambling on this one I hope you know what you are doing.

Because now USA has pretty much confirmed that there will be no attack on Iran and the troops sent to SA will be used for empowering the air defence of the oil fields. Trump has also made it clear that he does not want war with Iran.
SA oil production will also go very soon back to normal levels and this should bring down the oil price. Right now one major issue which could push gold higher is the trade war but there also the Chinese have told that the trade talks will continue on the ministerial level.
I also consider the spike on Friday to be partly a Friday afternoon low liquidity phenomenon. However, I'm just guessing like everyone else here.
