    Today, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative is issuing for public comment a supplemental list of products that could potentially be subject to additional duties in order to enforce U.S. rights in the World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute against the European Union (EU) and certain EU member States regarding EU subsidies on large civil aircraft. This supplemental list adds 89 tariff subheadings with an approximate trade value of $4 billion to the initial list published on April 12, which included tariff subheadings with an approximate trade value of $21 billion. May 15, 2018: WTO rules Airbus received illegal subsidies for its A380 and A350 received improper subsidies. (Most of this now irrelevant with cessation of A380 program Feb 2019).
Mar 28, 2019: WTO rules that Boeing received billions of dollars in illegal tax breaks and subsidies from the US Department of Defense*, Washington State, Kansas and South Carolina. and that US and Boeing failed to cure illegal tax breaks used under a federal program called Foreign Sales Corporations of FSC dating to before 2006. Damages of over 15-20b identified.
Mar 11-22 2019: 371 Boeing 737Max grounded worldwide with major reputational damage. and investigation into FFA certification of Boeing product. Jun 2019: further defects found in 737Max means grounding likely to extend further 4-6 months.
Jly 2019: Trump announces 4b tariffs against EU (Airbus).(???)

Tariffs have been around since the Venetians began protecting their positions since the 9th century, closely followed by the Spanish , the Portuguese, Dutch traders and into the 18th to the twentieth centuries by the English and the US etc...
nothing new here, just in the media eye more.
