First rule of politics: Are you losing? Then just move the goalpost and claim it a win.

If you shout "We're winning!" loud enough, the masses 'believe' it. The the narrative, rather than the reality, becomes the truth.....so long as things don't get really bad. But, by the time things get really bad, you'll have plenty of scapegoats lined up to blame.
