Markets just don't care at all though.

Someone figured out the formula: down moves don't go down as much as the subsequent up moves. So, let's push the market spring "down" with news and then it will shoot up further.

There are actually geopolitical ramifications regarding all this news and real lives are in play. That said, there is just WAY too much market impact for each headline. Unless this entire episode "teaches" algorithmic trading something, we can expect to see more and more of such "fake news" headlines in the future.

Here are two scenarios: 1) markets move a little less in the future as they realize there is too much potential for fake news. 2) markets move even MORE in the future on any news regardless of legitimacy just BECAUSE there is a news event.

What will happen? I would like to think things settle down and the former occurs but the pragmatic side of me says: The market is like a casino, positive drift and more movement back and forth (more participation) = more money for everyone. So, why on earth would algos attempt to REDUCE crazy back and forth moves? No shot. The "market" doesn't care on the intra-day directions of instruments provided the overall (longer term) moves are going up....so economies don't crash and participation dry up.

Until then 1-2% market swings alongside a 17 VIX are going to be the norm....
