Waller: Modernizing Federal Reserve Operations in the 21st Century
Thank you, David and thank you to Brookings for having me speak today. Whenever anyone hears the words "Federal Reserve" they immediately think about monetary policy and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) setting the federal funds rate. There is obviously tremendous media attention on those policy decisions, as there should be because they affect U.S. households and businesses and financial markets around the world. But the FOMC only meets 16 days a year to set monetary policy, so what are we doing at the Fed the rest of the time? The answer to that question is that we run a large and complex ... (full story)

From @araghchi|Apr 21, 2026|20 commentsBlockading Iranian ports is an act of war and thus a violation of the ceasefire. Striking a commercial vessel and taking its crew hostage is an even greater violation. Iran knows how to neutralize restrictions, how to defend its interests, and how to resist bullying.

From @financialjuice|Apr 21, 2026|84 commentsVance will depart for Islamabad on Wednesday morning - CNN.
Vance will depart to Pakistan Wednesday morning - CNN The US delegation will depart on Wednesday morning, according to CNN. That's a big sign that they've worked out the differences with Iran. Risk assets are higher on the headline. Update: The report says he's 'expected' to leave Wednesday morning so it's a bit less definitive. What's tricky here is that we aren't clear on when the ceasefire will end, with reports in Pakistan saying 7:50 pm tonight while Trump himself said yesterday it was tomorrow evening. Update 2: A second report from Axios says that Iran privately signalled yesterday it would attend the meetings but today indicated it would not. More details of the Axios report: The main sticking point is Iran's internal divide over whether to negotiate while the US naval blockade of Iranian ports remains in place, with the Revolutionary Guards reportedly pushing a harder line. Iran's Foreign Ministry said no decision had been made on sending a delegation, and the team was awaiting approval from the supreme leader. Vance, along with envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, remained in Washington as of midday Tuesday. A government plane originally scheduled to fly Witkoff and Kushner from Miami to Islamabad never departed. Pakistani, Egyptian, and Turkish mediators spent Monday pressing Iran to come to the table, and Pakistan's foreign minister urged both sides to extend the ceasefire and "give dialogue and diplomacy a chance." Late Monday there were signs Iran would participate, but by Tuesday morning the Iranians were stalling again.

From @RedboxWire|Apr 21, 2026|18 commentsIRAN IS SEEING INDICATIONS THAT THE U.S. IS PREPARED TO LIFT THE BLOCKADE, ACCORDING TO AP NEWS.
Iran’s UN envoy says his government has ‘received some sign’ the US is ready to stop the blockade Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said Tuesday that as soon as Washington ends the blockade, “I think the next round of the negotiations will take place in Islamabad.” He called the U.S. naval blockade a violation of the ceasefire, and reiterated that lifting it is a condition for new negotiations to take place. The United States has not publicly indicated that it will lift the blockade. The U.S. started the war against Iran, Iravani said, and if they want to return to the negotiating table “and find a political solution, they will find us ready.” “If they want to go to the war, in this case also Iran is ready for that,” he told a small group of reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York. When asked how hopeful he is he a
