People in Iran are scared in general because life is hard and dangerous, so they have the government that they want and it's the same government the religious right in the US wants because life is generally hard and dangerous.

In contrast, coastal elites in gated communities don't understand because life is easy and safe.

90% are religious fanatics because religion is the center of life and they practice it fanatically from the point of view of an average westerner where life is safer and easier.

I don't know much about the Ayatollahs specifically but if Magas are an analogy for Iranians in general then Magas want Trump to be king even though he couldn't win an election with record low approval ratings. A king is secure and strong. People who believe a single god rules eternally would innately want the same for their earthly government. One god, one emperor, one empire. They don't want a democracy. The Islamic Arab invaders attacked Persia some 1400 years ago, demolished all the glory of the kings of Iran (kings that you mention are preferred in your next paragraph) and forced conversation to Islam by force. They set up a caliphate and appointed their imported Arab gang leaders to run the country. They of course had accomplices that wanted to cooperate for money and power and positions. Many resisted the invaders and hundreds of thousands were murdered by the conquers. They did the same thing to Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Beirut, Egypt and pushed all the way to Europe.

At some point they preferred to just collect taxes from Persia and send it back home instead of actually rule the country. Their Muslim agents then hid behind new kingdoms to make sure their religion survived and was enforced.

The people could have democracy if the army hadn't trusted the mullas to temporarily run the country. That was their biggest mistake. The army should have held power until elections were held.
