.....it does look like ships are getting close to passing through the strait (it they haven't already) according to ship tracker sites....fingers crossed, because the markets haven't reacted as strongly as I would have expected were this indeed the case.

Yeah - this was the real catalyst to the drawdown.

Of course, if the US Intelligence can see the craft, shouldn't the US military (drones/fighter planes, navy) be able to shoot the craft? I guess seeing indications and seeing the vessels are still 2 different things.

That's the theory. The practise is probably quite different. You need to assume that even without major shipping, there will be traffic. The cost of blowing everything out of the water would get high very quickly. Assume a few fishermen get blown up and international pressure builds.

It'll be down to the re-insurers whether the ships make an attempt or not. Currently, something like 95% of insurance has been pulled. Once US finalises it's underwriting position, they can attempt to sail (en-mass).

For a slower boat, traveling 25 knots (29 mph) it will take ~15–20 minutes to reach shipping lanes. At 35 knots (40 mph)~10–15 minutes. Really fast boats @45 knots (52 mph) will take ~8–12 minutes. All of this to say there is no hiding behind debris to get to the shipping corridor. There's are ways to mask the boats, but for all practical purposes that's not an option. They'll be seen. They can be taken out.
