Coin experts estimate the last pennies minted Wednesday could sell for as much as $5 million each when they hit the auction block in December, USA Today reported. US Treasurer Brandon Beach pressed the button at the Philadelphia Mint on Wednesday to stamp out the final pennies after 232 years of production. The US government first started to mint pennies in 1793, when Philadelphia served as the nation’s capital. Some folk fear deflation because it will cause a recession, or worse, and they pretend to have some fickle hairbrained economics theory to back this up.

Of course it is nonsense, and the other way around, usually - recessions cause deflation. I read here that the Swiss have falling prices. Lets see what happens.

But then, there is always technological things that have fallen in rice since year dot. Tech has got better, price remains similar or whatever.

I'm not sure if any amount of moderate inflation will ever save the USA. It's rooted.

It's a good idea. What can you buy for $0.01? What can you buy for $0.05, for that matter? (I'm old enough to remember being able to buy stuff - candy - for pennies or a nickel.) Both the penny and the nickel should be abandoned. The modern penny is mostly zinc and copper-clad. The nickel is actually 25% nickel and 75% copper. All the metals have to be mined and there are better uses for them. Nickel, in particular, should not be wasted in coin production. I'll give DJT this small win.

Australia stopped the 1 cent so many years ago I've forgotten. Also 2 cent coins. Smallest is 5 cent.

When it comes to getting change, it is rounded in the usual manner, up or down, and that is probably the only reason for keeping 5 cent coins. And that is only if you pay using cash. Not many people do. Not even for parking meters.

There is some discussion about abandoning cash altogether. It is actually quite expensive (and obviously, unhygienic) to handle on so many levels. Won't happen, though.

On a personal level I like to keep a reasonable stash of cash somewhere really safe where nobody would ever look, for emergencies, or like if the networks go dead or the banks go on holidays. Happens.

Um, no. The pen has cost more to produce than it’s worth for a long time. Politicians have talked about getting rid of it for many years but representatives from IL refused to let it happen even though it was obviously necessary.

Maybe do a 1 minute search before posting made up lies?
