French Trade Quarterly Analysis - Q3 2025

Im finding it hard to digest this upbeat report.

Highlights (that make it sound upbeat)
Quarterly lens (Q3): the trade deficit narrowed vs Q2 because
Exports rose (notably aerospace/space deliveries), and
Energy imports eased a bit.
→ On a q/q basis, that’s an improvement in the trend.
Composition: better mix in manufactures (planes/parts) + less energy drag looks constructive in a narrative.

Why Im not seeing “major improvement”

Monthly reality (September): the deficit widened to −€6.6B vs −€5.9B expected, after Germany’s surplus also missed. That’s a negative surprise.

Scale: even with q/q progress, the level is still a large deficit; one better quarter doesn’t flip France into a surplus story.

Quality: part of the q/q “improvement” comes from lower energy imports (price/base effects), not a broad-based export boom. Meanwhile, domestic demand/imports bounced, squeezing the balance again in September.

Other weak spots this week: EZ retail −0.1% m/m and French private payrolls −0.3% q/q.

Am i missing something?

You are missing the part that they are trying to artificially keep the Euro afloat. The EU economy is boring and basically nothing happens in Europe anymore.

For me those are two very different messages, and if one gets Infront of a bigger audience that's what people will belive...
