Yen Strengthens on Risk Aversion

USD/JPY continued to fall for a second session, trading around 153.50 in Wednesday’s Asian session, as safe-haven demand strengthened the Yen. A broad decline in global equities, driven by concerns over stretched AI-related valuations and cautionary statements from leading Wall Street executives, increased risk aversion.

The Yen also benefited from renewed verbal intervention, with Finance Minister Katayama warning against excessive currency volatility, while Prime Minister Takaichi emphasized a cautious approach to further rate hikes, given still subdued wage-based inflation.
