  • Trump signs order hitting truck imports with 25% tariffs

    U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order today slapping a 25 per cent tariff on imported medium- and heavy-duty trucks beginning Nov. 1, with a carveout for vehicles traded under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement. Trump is also giving U.S. automakers additional relief from tariffs on auto parts, extending what was supposed to have been a short-term rebate until 2030. The amended action provides a rebate of 3.75 per cent relative to the sales price of a domestically assembled vehicle. That figure was reached by putting the 25 per cent import tax on parts that make up 15 per cent of a vehicle's sales price. ... (full story)

This man appears to be doing more harm than good. We have been paying a lot more for almost everything ever since he started this tariff war. And taxes have increased significantly.

The rest of the world is breathing too much of the finest oxygen in the US , it can’t be allowed.

The tax collecting revenue stream keeps rolling in .

The cost of freight is an important line item fed through into the price of pretty most every product.

I don't know much about trucks, but I'm a little surprised that truck operators in the US would consider, say, Euro made trucks over US trucks anyway. Are they that much cheaper? I can't believe that.

could be related to truck quality ( Mercedes-Benz leads the way, I believe )

I kinda suspected that. So, despite what is said in post#4 below yours (which were sort of my initial thoughts) the final price matters not so much for the sake of quality.

In which case truck buyers might be brand loyal to Mercedes even in the face of tariffs. Ouch. But there must be benefits like durability or lower breakdowns or maintenance or something with quality.

I dunno anything. I drove my first USA made car the other day, and even it was German BMW X5 diesel. Made in Carolina or something. 350,000 km (200,000 miles) on the clock, going fine.

Mercedes-Benz have the best engines. Trucks are a little plastic. Not built for conditions outside the city slickers.

See reality tv series like Outback Truckers and Ice Road Truckers. They all look very MACK like. No Mercs there I'm afraid. Real trucks doin' real shit.

I also bought a new battery drill recently. Could not go past Milwaukee. Even with Trump's 10% tariffs. Still a better meal deal.
