The yen strengthened to 149 per dollar on Monday as U.S. shutdown fears weighed on the greenback. Markets await U.S. data for Fed clues, while in Japan, focus is on the Tankan survey and BoJ minutes showing openness to rate hikes.

Domestically, the LDP will elect a new leader on October 4 after Prime Minister Ishiba’s resignation. Key issues are living costs, immigration, and restoring trust, with proposals including food tax cuts, lower insurance premiums, and income tax breaks.

The outcome matters for markets since the fiscal policy direction. Populist or coalition-driven, it will affect inflation and the BoJ’s tightening timeline.

Technically, USD/JPY faces resistance at 150.20 and support at 147.80. Political shifts in Tokyo add an additional domestic layer to a currency still dominated by U.S. fiscal risks and Fed expectations.
