Hardly stealth, surely?

I look in on a forum to do with all matters hi-fi, audio and associated hardware. Folk in the US are shocked horrified and mortified at the price shocks. And I'm not even sure if many of the tariffs are yet to fully come into effect yet.

There are some US manufacturers, but many or most of their components are drawn from overseas.

That's in a perfect world, like in theory. In textbooks.

Traders are often quite confused as to quite a lot of things. Fund managers have buckets of money pouring in each day and they have to buy stocks. It's their job. They can't be choosy, they have balanced portfolios.

Look at the bubbly double top before the massive 1929 crash. People don't care. True. There is a myth that the economy and the stock market are in alignment. It depends on a thousand other things.

I know that individual traders even buy stocks when the stock is clearly a dog. Trite example. It also assumes perfect and rational expectations and a bunch of other stuff.

Yes, the Dow may go to 100,000.

Difficult to discuss the second point as it is qualified "to a large degree" and that means different things to different people. "no one has yet replied who claims these tariffs will destroy America" - well, outside of shock jocks on TV, who does? Tariffs may cause or be the trigger for an economic reset, not just for the USA but for the world, or they may not.

Knowing that there is a difference between what should happen and what will happen.

So far other countries have been intelligent and not retaliated, so that is a big sigh of relief.

On the headline, the maths doesn't work for me at all. Maybe I am missing a few zeros. What is expected annual tariff revenue?

Lots of rounding here, for the exercise.

Say, 10% of imports which I think are about 4 trillion total. That is 4 with 12 zeros.

10% tariffs, take off two zeros.

4 with 10 zeros is 400 billion I think. If tariffs 20% (on average) that's 800 billion per year.

Divide by 12 to get monthly. Certainly not 200 billion per month, surely, and things are still all a bit wobbly.

Someone fact check that for me. I've been through this exercise before, the other day, and I'm still not sure.

taking a very simplistic view, there are 340ish million people in the USA, & unless exporters, importers swallow the tariffs (& why would they?) That's about $588 per head in additional cost. I might be short of a few brain cells in my aging years but that seems unlikely to me!

None a single post here is correct.

I’ve asked and no one has yet replied who claims these tariffs will destroy America. I know exactly where every penny goes. As an actual trader, unlike many here, I claim Trader Status with the irs and can deduct a home office and other expenses. To do that you have to track all your expenses. I spend more in a year than most make and every one of my significant expenses are not affected by tariffs at all.

My mortgage, taxes, college, insurances, the most important food (protein), none of these are affected by tariffs. I and others do not have to any significant amount of things that go up measurably for tariffs.

Here the thing, the stock market discounts all available information. If tariffs would hurt America to a large degree, stocks would not trade to new record highs everyday.
