The issue here is outright intimidation. A protracted, organised campaign from the Donald and his merry men , quite literally on a daily basis , just yesterday whilst Powell was giving testimony a Rottweiler was set loose .

Interference from government or political meddling is likely to have the opposite effect on markets if they perceive Fed independence is compromised and open to political influence .

These shenanigans are being used to subvert the authority of the Fed members, particularly Powell .
This administration doesn’t give a hoot about inflation or the Fed mandate, it’s one and only priority is interest payments , and they’re “ huge “ probably the “ greatest ever “ to paraphrase Donald .

Regardless of what THIS president does, each administration has the authority to name a fed chair upon completion of the chair's term. I would venture a guess that no president ever chose someone they thought would do a BAD job....so, in this case, it is likely to be someone who aligns with the current administration's positions and objectives. This was going to happen by May 2026 anyway (Powell's term as chair is done), but the above snippet simply states Trump will NAME a successor, not that he plans to fire Powell and install the successor. The supreme Court has decided the latter isn't allowed.

I don't see how this is manipulation or interference (yet anyway).

Powell has said repeatedly that there is no intent to cut until (likely) September anyway. This doesn't change that.

Plus, this is just naming a successor...not a huge deal (albeit slightly earlier than other presidents)

I agree with you regarding the interference/intimation aspect, BUT...........

Powell has done a great job of dismissing the interference, the FED has continued to stand strong (it is a voting body after all, not just one man), AND the markets don't seem to care one little bit about the daily "barking". Remember the FIRST time Trump threatened Powell earlier this year? Markets DID react initially, and then retraced the down move after a couple of days. Since then, the market has been brushing off any whiff of successor naming because the expectation is that Powell serves out his term and the FED sticks to it's guns despite the administration's peppering.

What will be interesting is how quickly the next FED chair (no doubt a Trump lackey) influences rate cuts. If certain members feel rates can be cut in July, that means we will likely see cuts in September (as the FED had planned) once this tariff implementation becomes better understood. Depending on how many cuts occur this year, the expediency of 2026 cuts (Powell's term is done in May) could have a big impact on the markets. Of course, those cuts are nearly a year away and a LOT can, and will, happen between now and then

He sure did.....though he says he was "persuaded to do so" by people be now despises...and that they led him in the wrong direction (paraphrasing here). Of course, it is never Trump's fault. The buck always stops elsewhere, if negative. But that's neither here nor there....what matters is that the next chair's thinking will be inline with this president's.
