South Africa: Current account of the balance of payments - First quarter 2025
The deficit on the current account of the balance of payments narrowed to R35.6 billion in the first quarter of 2025 from a revised R39.3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024. The current account deficit as a ratio of gross domestic product (GDP) remained broadly the same at 0.5% from the fourth quarter of 2024 to the first quarter of 2025. South Africa’s trade surplus narrowed slightly from R226.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024 to R221.2 billion in the first quarter of 2025 as the value of merchandise imports increased more than that of goods exports.
