Canada has had massive % tariffs on USA products for many many years now. (decades). Some of them are 100%+ (some 200 to 300%). LOTS OF TARIFFS Canada places on USA products. Canada has justified these tariffs to protect local industries like Dairy, Lumber, Metals etc...

Trump is simply returning the favour to countries like Canada.

HE HAS A HUGE POINT. Other countries need to simply drop their own tariffs on USA made products and allow USA products to be exported for sale in countries like Canada, free and clear.

I am Canadian

You people here from the USA. Get yours heads out of the $%^& and get over the TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome).

The USA levies thousands of tariffs and duties on other countries goods. Who is going to fill millions of new low-skilled manufacturing jobs? Unemployment in the USA around 4.2% - pretty much everyone who wants to work, is working. Nostalgia for some supposed golden age in America when everyone was turning a wrench ignores who we are now. Modern hi-tech manufacturing is getting more and more dependent on robotics. Physical AI will only extend that trend. You've consumed the kool-aid that Trump is selling, but the reality is Trump and the GOP refuse to raise taxes and need revenue from a massive protectionist scheme to to fund tax breaks for the wealthy.

Vietnam "Tariff" is 80%

in reality that number is not the Tariff, its the trade imbalance. Example: We import 401B from China and export 131B. (401-131)/401= 67%

The real trade-weighted Tariffs are

China: 4%
EU: 3%
Vietnam: 6%

So with his faulty math, Trump claims "light reciprocal tariffs" of 34%, 20% and 46%.

None of it makes sense."

Speaking of jobs - I have tried to fill many good-paying jobs in civil engineering and construction management. High pay, good benefits. No takers. Applicants with no skills. Apprenticeship programs in the skilled trades also are typically under-subscribed. We have problems with the workforce in this country - lack of education and lack of a desire to work generally. Somehow, making millions of new low-skilled jobs making widgets doesn't seem to be the right solution to those problems.

Maybe this isn't really about manufacturing.

If you found out that your boss was taking 50% of your paycheck and giving it to the guy at the desk beside you and had been doing it for decades, wouldn't you want that to end? Even "just" 10% being taken from you over your life time of working is a lot. (Using an average salary of $50,000 per year x 10% x 40 years of work = $200,000.)

Now, what if that guy the boss was giving 10% of your check to, saved up that 10% and started a side hustle business that makes and provides the food that you pay for at the cafeteria at work?

Not only are you being robbed of the 10%, but that fellow worker is getting paid again by you after he's taken your 10%, by selling you the product that you gave him the money to make in the first place.

Maybe this is just about getting ripped off...TWICE and the side affect is that the US manufactures more of their own stuff and creates jobs for their own country instead of giving money away to other countries and creating jobs for other countries?

I guess where this falls apart is if they start hiring a ton. But I'd bet a ton goes into AI stuff and factories. But I guess who knows ha it just seems like a large amount to do tarrifs, larger than China can still depreciate their currency (unlike lat time when the 10% or whatever killed most of the tarrifs)
