The problem isn't tariffs. It's the bloated federal government. We need a complete overhaul. We have strayed way beyond our original intents. We have become a war-mongering, nation-building country, not worthy of the original intents of limited federal government. It will probably take an uncomfortable war against us to set the ship right again. Tariffs are not going to work to bring back a golden age of US manufacturing. Where are all the Chinese plants that have relocated into the USA because of the existing tariffs? The US economy does not need to and can not compete in a world economy where avg wages are <25% of what US workers expect. DJT continues to lie about tariffs, or maybe he just can not comprehend, saying that tariffs are paid by the foreign vendors, when, in fact, they are paid by the importer and passed on to US consumers. Tariffs are simply an additional tax on US consumers. The most consistent Republican idea, over time, has been: we hate taxes. DJT promises to reduce actual taxes, and, in order to do that, he proposes a massive program of untargeted tariffs on imported goods. This will have a huge negative impact on US exporters, who comprise over $3trillion a year of the US annual GDP. The proponents of tariffs do not usually like to discuss the resulting bailouts of US industries that were impacted.

When has imposition of tariffs actually worked to bring manufacturing jobs back to the USA? Where are all the Chinese-built plants that have sprung up because of the tariffs? And who is here to fill jobs in industry, anyway? No, it's not "fake news": there is a huge shortage of skilled labor in the US. All across the spectrum, you can't find skilled labor. I have seen 100's of high-paying job openings for welders at US shipyards go unfilled for years. Can't find the welders, can't fill the apprenticeships. Same for electricians, railroad engineers, etc etc. I have tried to fill 6-figure jobs for construction engineers, inspectors, over the last decade and more. Zero qualified applicants.

Devotees of DJT lack the critical thinking skills to see that all he is offering is just another con. Rile up the "base" with endless vilification of illegal immigrants, even legal immigrants, and crow about "America First" with the promise of some golden age of manufacturing returning to the USA. I'm all for more skilled manufacturing jobs. But trade wars will not bring them back. What Biden's CHIPS Act has done is a good start - it has $200 million for semiconductor industry workforce training. Oh, but that takes investment. Somebody might have to be taxed to pay for it. Rent-seeking capitalist owners in the US might actually have to invest in their workforce. Easier just to fart out a smoke screen full of empty promises. Easier to ship jobs overseas, which is what they've done for decades.

Trump proposes a huge program of non-targeted tariffs. His apologists claim it's a "negotiating tactic." You can see over and over again how this has not worked. The US is in competition with other large, maturing economies. Tariffs will be met with retaliatory tariffs. The tariff game is ultimately just a lose-lose waste of time.

And Trump proposes to "round up" 14 million illegal aliens and deport them? Never a word about the cost to do that or about the economic impact of losing 10 million + active workers from the workforce.

Anyway, if you've been waiting around for a recession, I'd suggest starting to build your short equities positions as soon as DJT is sworn in, God forbid.

Selective, targeted, limited tariffs, not the isolationist program DJT is proposing. Tariffs need to be complemented with other government efforts to help develop native industries. Tariffs, on their own, at best, will have little, if any positive effect over way too long a period of time to wait. Trump's plan is to use massive tariff taxation to generate revenue that would otherwise come from direct taxation on income, capital gains, and business activity.

The anti-taxation ethos that pervades the American right is ultimately Anti-American. Many in the camp would rather see US infrastructure crumble to a third-world level before they'd consent to any concept of "common good" and contribute to the construction and upkeep of all the ports, roads, waterways, power systems, and etc etc that constitute civilization. It's a sick state of mind that is constantly fed with propaganda from the oligarch fascist press dynasties like that of the Murdochs, et al.

It'll take reduced spending and increased revenue. The latter will have to come from higher taxes.
