    U.S. imports increased 0.9 percent in April, after advancing 0.6 percent in March, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Higher fuel and nonfuel import prices contributed to the overall rise. Prices for U.S. exports increased 0.5 percent in April following a 0.1-percent advance the previous month. The price index for U.S. imports advanced 0.9 percent in April, the largest 1-month increase since the index rose 2.9 percent in March 2022. Wow largest increase since March 2022... yeah inflation is absolutely dominating US right now. 0.9 is a massive number.

The fixation on high frequency data like this is bonkers. Energy is a large component and is highly volatile. Unless there is a sustained move in commodities, primarily oil, there is little meaningful information in this. Much more interesting is the continued construction weakness and what that means for commodities demand.
