CPI is tomorrow...I think you meant PPI....though CPI probably will as well (but your guess at the market reaction to such news is as good as mine...what SHOULD happen, doesn't always transpire)

lol... markets are looking for every little negative thing to bring the stock market up and down the dollar. It is a big upside even with the PPI last month's downgrade. CPI will blow them out.

Oh you know the CPI is coming in hotter than the temperatures in Death Valley. Also we have a Powell speech coming today as well. I expect today will be the starting catalyst of some needed volatility.

My thoughts exactly. Not to say the end of day won't be exactly where the initial move took us, but it goes to show that even if you had the numbers YESTERDAY you might not be able to make the proper directional guess/trade.

Must have been details that the market found positive outside of the headline number.

Last report was revised from 0.2 to -0.1. Huge difference.

That was the first thing I noticed too, but even with the revision, the two-month was basically "in line" rather than "better than expected". It must have been a combo of the revision plus an independent part of the report, a focus of market makers, coming in better than expected.

Hot but maybe not as hot as the data suggest.

PPI at 2.2% y/y. Core PPI at 2.4%. PPI less food, energy, and trade is most notable at 3.1% y/y up from 2.8%.

In April crude was high and we might be seeing that factored in but markets aren't concerned as crude is back below $80.

Here's where the notable gains and drops were:

Crude Petroleum (Intermediate Demand) increased by 18.6%.

Gasoline (Final Demand) increased by 5.4%.

Unprocessed Goods for Intermediate Demand increased by 3.2%.


Diesel Fuel (Final Demand) decreased by 6.1%.

Chicken Eggs (Final Demand) decreased by 4.5%.

Electric Power (Final Demand) decreased by 3.7%.

Core CPI forecasts are pretty aligned at 0.3%. Overall CPI is tilted towards lower than 0.4%. One decimal can be deceiving. The average forecast via Bloomberg is 0.37%.

Anything other than 0.3% in the core number will move markets. Overall CPI above 0.4% will be a bigger beat than meets the eye.

Ahhhhhh, so it was the CHICKEN EGG demand reduction that caused the movement. Now it all makes sense

I agree that the lack of a hundredths place in the decimal for these numbers has a hefty impact on how good/bad things seem. I don't know how rounding occurs on FF, or how the broader market reacts to/cares about those fractions, but I have to believe the instantaneous, algorithmic moves take every variable into account much faster than we can even see #s post here.

....what DOES interest me is the reduction in diesel demand. With trucks (and trains) being the #1 source of goods distribution in this country, I wonder how impactful this is on modeling the future demand for said goods. Of course, seeing the trend in these values would be required to make any sort of projections, but if the number is truly "demand", and not just "spend" (which would simply be affected by rising/falling prices), then it's more interesting

Knowing the ultimate outcome helps catching the train early, but in most cases (actually, almost all cases) TA beats FA by the largest margin.

FA is basically useless for FX trading. It's useful for other markets, but not as useful as TA.

TA seems to be pretty useless right now. In my opinion (I may be wrong of course), a bearish retracement/decline on the SPY should be imminent. Markets still look overbought to me but bullish momentum continues. Holding positions (equities especially) into tomorrows close is a crap shoot at this point....
