MT4 uses ticks in order to get the volume. Many of these brokers retrieve price of each market from many sources i.e. goldman sach or morgan stanley, reuters etc. Volume is reliable on stock because it is done in an exchange.

Volume does not show universal value/volume accross all brokers. There's slight ofset to each broker's volume, but can be misleading. Need a pinch of salt
