      First of all, is he trading real money? Secondly, risk reward and money management should go hand in hand. If not, then use a SL. Pretty basic stuff.

      Add $10K to your account and wait for the turn around (in a week, month, year) and hopefully you'll get back to square one without a loss. Poor money management gets you everytime.
