Spreads aren't really a factor futures. The spread for most contracts will only be 1-2 ticks unless you're dealing with something really illiquid.

Structuring as a Commodity Pool Operator (CPO) is probably the easiest way to set up a hedge fund in the US. In terms of licensing, you'd only need a Series 3 which doesn't require sponsorship unlike the more common Series 7.
