The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development jointly announced the following new residential construction statistics for May 2026: Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in May were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,413,000. This is 0.7 percent below the revised April rate of 1,423,000 and is 0.2 percent below the May 2025 rate of 1,416,000. Housing starts in the United States stood at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,177,000 in May, declining 15.4% from April's revised figure and 8.7% from the same month a year earlier, the Census Bureau said on Tuesday. Single-family housing starts fell 1.9% on a monthly basis to 882,000. Meanwhile, building permits slipped 0.7% from April to 1,413,000 and were 0.2% lower than in May 2025.
