A plan by Poland’s central bank to fund the country’s defense needs through its gold reserves is a “mirage,” the finance minister has said. Central Bank Governor Adam Glapiński and the country’s president, Karol Nawrocki, unveiled a proposal in early March to rival a contested EU defense financing initiative. Poland’s central bank was one of the world’s biggest gold buyers last year, closing 2025 with around 500 tons of the precious metal.
