Something is rotten in the province of Ontario amid the mothballed assembly lines in Brampton and Ingersoll. The implications for Canadian motor vehicle production are stark. Canada assembled just 1.2 million vehicles in 2025, down 7.8% from 2024 (Chart 1). That decline may not look as troubling in isolation, but it represents a 33% drop from 2019 levels—a structural break, not a cyclical wobble. By comparison, U.S. production held at 10.4 million units, down a modest 3.2% and only 2.3% below 2019 levels.
