Mexico likes to advertise it’s large and vibrant export sector, but there’s a problem. Mexico’s trade surplus with the US is bigger than ever, but what does that matter if ordinary Mexican’s don’t benefit. Mexico’s real GDP per capita has been flat for the past two decades, so - whatever is going on in Mexico’s export sector - it isn’t doing the country any good. My personal suspicion is that true value-added is low and that booming exports to the US are in fact mostly goods that are being transshipped from elsewhere in the world.
