U.S. copper prices notched a new record high Monday, surpassing their last peak from July, when President Trump’s tariff policies rattled the market. Trump’s decision to slap a tariff on copper products, rather than the raw material, whipsawed traders over the summer. They had bid up U.S. futures and loaded warehouses with copper in anticipation of a steep import tax on cathodes and other less processed forms of the metal, which is essential to everything electric.
