US: The Recession of the Bottom 50%
We start our research piece with a chart prepared by Mark Zandi, Chief Economist of Moody’s Analytics. His work makes the divide in U.S. consumption patterns impossible to ignore. Since 2019, spending has fractured along income lines. The top ten percent of households have pulled far ahead, while the bottom half have stalled. In between sits the middle forty percent, the broad middle and upper middle class, neither fully insulated by wealth nor as vulnerable as the bottom.
