Public sector net borrowing (PSNB ex) in February 2023 was £16.7 billion, £9.7 billion more than February 2022 and the highest February borrowing since monthly records began in 1993, largely because of substantial spending on energy support schemes. Central government debt interest payable was £6.9 billion in February 2023, £1.3 billion less than February 2022; the recent large movements are because of the effect of Retail Prices Index (RPI) changes on index-linked gilts.
