The mastermind behind the £26 million Brink’s-Mat gold bullion robbery has died penniless in a nursing home in South East London. Brian "The Colonel" Robinson, 78, was "cheated" out of his share of the record haul after another member of the operation informed the police. He was the "draftsman" of the 'crime of the century' at a warehouse on Heathrow Airport’s perimeter in 1983 and stole 6,800 gold ingots, diamonds and cash worth £26 million - more than £100 million in today's money.
