Census Bureau Reports 11% Dip in Copper Scrap Exports

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The exports of copper waste and scrap by the U.S. registered notable decline during the initial eleven-month period of 2019, says data published by the U.S. Census Bureau. The country exported $2.61 billion worth of scrap copper during this period, down by 10.90% when compared with the exports of $2.93 billion during Jan-Nov ’18.

The primary export destination of copper waste and scrap from the U.S. was China. The waste import restrictions declared by Chinese authorities have resulted in 62% decline in U.S. exports to that country. Still, China accounted for more than 15% of all shipments by the U.S. in Jan-Nov ’19, importing $397.07 million worth of copper scrap from the U.S. The second largest importer was Malaysia, whose imports from the U.S. were valued at $377.89 million. In third place was South Korea, whose imports from the U.S. totalled $287.41 million.

Meantime, the data through November ’19 suggests over 20% decline in U.S. imports of copper waste and scrap. The country imported $567.85 million worth of material, as compared with the imports of $713.35 million in the corresponding eleven-month period in 2018.

The top five sources of import were Canada ($324.54 million), Mexico ($183.15 million), Dominican Republic ($8.84 million), Chile ($7.30 million) and Costa Rica ($6.39 million). Nearly 93% of all copper scrap imports by the U.S. were from the above five countries. The combined imports from these countries totalled $530.22 million.
