SHANGHAI, May 16 (SMM) – As part of the efforts to control air pollution, China's top steelmaking city of Tangshan ordered local steel mills to cut steelmaking capacity by 10.07 million mt and iron making capacity by 8.04 million mt this year, the government said on Wednesday May 15.
The government also aimed to slash steel capacity to 100 million mt/year by 2020. The number of steel plants should be kept under 30 by 2020.
Tangshan currently has about 40 steelmakers, with annualised pig iron capacity of 128 million mt and crude steel capacity of 134 million mt. These account for 52.6% and 56.1%, respectively, of the total in Hebei province.
