SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Metalex Ltd.- the subsidiary of Sao Paulo-based Companhia Brasileira de Alumnio (CBA) announced investment aimed at better utilizing aluminium scrap at its melt plant.

According to company news release, the proposed investment is the first step of the earlier announced $20.6 million investment to boost its aluminium manufacturing capacity that uses recycled-content. It must be noted that the company had recently increased its billet production capacity from 75,000 to 90,000 tonnes per annum by way of installation of a new sidewall-style furnace.

The second phase of the expansion comprises building of a new recycling plant that will boost the existing scrap consumption from 60% to 80% by including outdated scrap in addition to process scrap. The new recycling plant is expected to start operations by 2023, it noted.

The Metalex facility has a capacity to produce 90,000 tonnes of aluminium from post-consumer scrap recycled at its factory. It had made significant capital investments at the facility over the past several years, including massive development of the scrap yard and modernization and automation of processes.
