post at 4:48am: UK PM Johnson: There Will Be No Alignment With EU Rules In Future Relationship -Brexit Bill Contains No Possibility Of Extension
MPs will vote on Friday on whether to back the prime minister's plan for the UK to leave the EU on 31 January. The EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill would also ban the government from extending the transition period - where the UK is out of the EU but follows many of its rules - past 2020. Boris Johnson said it would end "delay and rancour" and provide "certainty". Opponents say the bill leaves the UK's future uncertain, and agreeing a trade deal with the EU could take many years. post at 4:23pm: UK parliament approves early general election on December 12 -BBGUK lawmakers agree to hold Dec. 12 election in bid to resolve Brexit paralysis The United Kingdom is to hold a December general election for the first time since 1923 in a bid to break the Brexit impasse. On Tuesday evening, lawmakers from parties across the U.K. Parliament voted by 438 to 20 to hold a nationwide poll on December 12. Amendments to the bill, including an alternative Dec. 9 election date and a lowering of the voting age to 16, were earlier rejected. The bill will now go to the House of Lords — Parliament’s upper house — for further debate on Wednesday, although this is unlikely to derail the decision made by MPs (Members of Parliament) in the lower chamber. It was Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s fourth attempt to secure an early general election. The last national vote in 2017 ended in a “hung Parliament,” making it difficult for the government pass legislation. The ruling Conservatives will this time hope to gain a clear majority, allowing them to push through their Brexit plans.

The prime minister can only hold an election with the support of MPs - who have blocked it three times. Efforts by opposition MPs to lower the voting age to 16 and allow EU nationals to take part have failed. Proposed changes to the PM's early election bill to extend voting rights were not selected for debate by the Deputy ...
